We use a very effective method of keeping paste entirely off of the ceiling, thereby eliminating the worry of staining today's cheap latex flats with paste or sponge water.

This is 3M's #2070 Safe-Release Painter's Masking Tape. It's a mostly-waterproof, stiff white tape with an adhesive similar to that found on Post-It Notes. We find the 2" width to be the most convenient. The cost is around seven or eight bucks a roll, but as you'll see, it goes a long way, so the cost is easily justifiable.

Pull a length of tape a few inches longer than the width of the wallpaper, and stick it on the ceiling where the sheet is to be hung. Here we used two pieces taped together to provide an extra margin of protection because this particular ceiling had been recently painted with Ben Moore's Super Hide flat, a notoriously stainable, low-end contractor's flat latex. Hang as you normally would, trimming at the ceiling and washing the paste off of the tape. Unlike masking tape, blue tape, or Easy Mask, the white tape will not become soggy or leave adhesive residue on the ceiling. Just don't leave a piece stuck up there while you take a lunch break. After about ten minutes, it starts to bond to the paint.

After you finish washing the sheet, peel the tape off of the ceiling.

Place the same piece of tape on the celing where the next sheet is to be hung. Proceed as before. The same piece of tape can literally be used around a whole room, which is why it's so economical even at $7-a-roll; a twenty-five-cent piece will do an entire job.

Here is a portion of the finished room. Absolutely no ceiling paint was harmed during the production of this job!

"Storm the walls around this prison - leave the inmates, free the guards
Deal me up another future from some brand new deck of cards
Take the chip off of my shoulder, smooth out all the lines
Take me out among the rustlin' pines, 'til it shines"

-Bob Seger
